Namaste & welcome to Yoga 55!

Amar Udar - Founder and Yoga Teacher

Your Teacher

My name is Amar Udar, and I created Yoga 55 to make the benefits of yoga more accessible to seniors and beginners. As a senior myself, I understand the importance of staying active, maintaining balance, and building strength in a safe, supportive environment.

My yoga journey began in Mumbai, India, the birthplace of yoga, where I studied at Shubha Yoga Kendra before becoming an instructor. I went on to teach therapeutic Iyengar Yoga there for more than 15 years, working with students from diverse backgrounds and helping people manage back, knee, neck, and respiratory concerns. By using props and modified postures, I made each practice safer and more effective for students with different needs and abilities. My dedication to teaching was recognized with the “Dedicated Yoga Teacher” and “Ideal Yoga Teacher” awards.

After moving to Leesburg, I continued teaching through Loudoun County Parks, Recreation, and Community Services. At local community centers, I lead structured, hour-long classes for seniors and beginners, guide students toward better alignment and more effective movement, and create a welcoming atmosphere that encourages consistency and growth.

Class Overview

Each Yoga 55 class follows a balanced four-part format. We begin with a whole-body warm-up to loosen the joints and muscles and increase circulation. We then move through a thoughtfully sequenced set of asanas, or poses, designed to improve flexibility, strength, mobility, and balance.

Pranayama, or breathwork, is another essential part of every class. Mindful breathing can increase lung capacity, reduce stress, improve concentration, digestion, sleep, and overall well-being. We conclude with 12 to 15 minutes of Shavasana, which I simply call relaxation—a valuable opportunity to calm the nervous system, release muscular tension, and absorb the benefits of the practice.

Through Yoga 55, I am grateful to share my experience, knowledge, and love of yoga with others. Whether you are new to yoga or looking for a thoughtful way to stay active, you are warmly invited to join our community. I hope to see you on the mat soon!
